How to add a donate button to your church website

Three ways to add online giving to your church website (a button, an embedded form or a Give page) with steps for WordPress, Squarespace and Wix.

The short answer

The simplest way is a “Give” button that links to your church’s giving page: add it to your main menu and your home page. If you’d rather people give without leaving your site, embed your giving form using the code your giving platform provides. WordPress, Squarespace and Wix all let you add a button link in a minute and paste embed code into an HTML or code block.

Three ways to add giving to your website

OptionHow it worksBest for
A Give button or linkOpens your giving page, usually in the same tabEvery church. Quick, reliable and works with any website.
An embedded giving formYour giving form appears inside a page on your own siteChurches that want givers to stay on their website.
A Give pageA page on your site that explains giving, with the button or form on itAnswering questions before people ask them.

Most churches do all three: a Give page on their website, with an embedded form or button on it, and a Give link in the menu that goes to that page.

Where should the Give button go?

  • The main menu. A top-level “Give” item, usually the last one, is where people look first.
  • The home page, near your service times and welcome, not buried at the bottom.
  • The footer, so it’s on every page.
  • Sermon, podcast and livestream pages, for people who join you online.
  • Appeal and event pages, linking straight to that fund or appeal.

What the code looks like

Your giving platform gives you the exact code to copy. With GoodSeed it looks like this, with your church’s own address in place of your-church.

A simple link, for a button or menu item:

https://app.goodseedgiving.com/give/your-church

An embedded giving form, to paste into an HTML or code block:

<iframe src="https://app.goodseedgiving.com/embed/your-church"
  title="Give to St Mark’s Church" width="100%" height="760"
  loading="lazy"></iframe>

How to add a donate button in WordPress

  1. Button on a page: edit the page, add a Buttons block, type “Give”, and paste your giving page address as the link.
  2. Menu item: with a block theme, go to Appearance → Editor → Navigation and add a Custom Link. With a classic theme, go to Appearance → Menus, add a Custom Link and save the menu.
  3. Embedded form: add a Custom HTML block where you want the form, paste the embed code, and preview the page.

How to add a donate button in Squarespace

  1. Button on a page: edit the page, add a Button block, and set its link to your giving page address.
  2. Menu item: in the Pages panel, click + next to your navigation and choose Link.
  3. Embedded form: add a Code or Embed block and paste the embed code. Some Squarespace plans limit code blocks; if yours does, use a button instead.

How to add a donate button in Wix

  1. Button on a page: click Add, choose a Button, then set its link to your giving page address.
  2. Menu item: open Site Menu, add a Link and paste the address.
  3. Embedded form: click Add → Embed Code → Embed HTML, paste the embed code, then resize the box so the whole form shows.

Other website builders and church management systems work the same way. Look for a “custom link” option for menus, and an “HTML”, “code” or “embed” block for forms. Menu names change from time to time, so if a step doesn’t match exactly, search your builder’s help pages for “add a link to the menu” or “embed HTML”.

What to include on your church’s Give page

  • Why your church gives, in a sentence or two, in your own voice.
  • What gifts make possible: your ministry, your building, your mission partners, with a photo or two.
  • Every way to give: online, regular giving, standing order, cash and envelopes, and who to ask about leaving a gift in a will.
  • Gift Aid, explained in one line, with a link to your declaration.
  • Who to contact with questions, usually your treasurer or giving officer.
Bank details on your website?

Many churches share their bank details for standing orders. It’s generally safe to share an account you only receive money into, but some churches prefer to give them out on request, or in a members’ area, to cut down on misuse. Either way, never share online banking logins, and keep two people involved in any payments out.

Making sure it works for everyone

  • Label the button clearly: “Give” or “Give online”, not just an icon.
  • Check it on a phone. Most people will tap it on one.
  • Give an embedded form a title, as in the example above, so screen readers can announce it.
  • Make sure the form is tall enough to show without its own scroll bar.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to embed a donation form on our website?

Yes, if the form comes from a reputable giving platform. The card details go straight to the payment provider over a secure connection, never through your website. Your site should use https, which most website builders do by default.

Should the Give button open in a new tab?

It’s usually better in the same tab, so the back button works as people expect. Phones handle new tabs awkwardly.

Can we link to a specific appeal?

Yes. Most giving platforms give each fund or appeal its own link, so a button on your building project page can go straight to that appeal.

Do we need a developer?

No. Adding a button or pasting embed code takes a few minutes in WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and most other website builders.
